As a relatively new user of Spotify, I can’t really commiserate with the details of this article, but we love a good meme here at Current! This year’s Spotify Wrap-Ups have been great to see, and the Apple Music vs Spotify nonesense is great. The most troubling bit, is the impact it’s all had on independent artists and musicians. Seeing a million or so plays while reaping dozens of dollars can feel defeating. Licensing deals with major advertisers are becoming more lucrative than record deals. As someone who considers themselves an *ahem* “artist” - and has music on Spotify, BTW - it’s been alarming to see the slow commoditization of recorded music. I knew it was over when Apple decided a song was worth $0.99. It’s only gotten worse for artists since then.Anywho, its important to remember that art is supposed to be an outlet, not a commodity, so if you feel it, make it.#GetCurrent #CurrentMarketingSolutions #MakeArt #MakeGoodArt #MakeGreatArt #MakeAnyArthttps://lnkd.in/eqjS4cDk

When I first entered the music business in 2009, the entire industry was on its knees. Piracy was rife and CD sales were dying year on year. The global recorded music business revenue was in a state of freefall. However, I saw what I felt was the most incredible consumer product for music consumption ever created. That product was called Spotify.Fans could find any track they wanted to listen to, without having to search through torrents and other file sharing websites like Pirate Bay.It was very logical that what Spotify had brought to the market, music streaming, was going to be the future of the music business. Many artists attack Spotify, without fully understanding how it was back then and how bad things would be if Spotify had not pioneered music streaming in the music business. For this reason, we have to thank Spotify for saving the music business and getting the momentum in place for rivals to create their own streaming platforms. It is predicted that the recorded music business revenues will double between now and 2030, and beyond that, it could be 10x or more as Spotify and other platforms introduce new initiatives designed to further monetize their user bases. Here are 7 reasons why we should all thank Spotify:

90,000 minutes - or about 4 hours each day. That was what 'Spotify Wrapped' revealed about my 2023 in music. With this in mind I was fascinated to read this article. What it fails to acknowledge is how Spotify has disrupted the music industry in the favour of consumers - you no longer need to buy an album where you like only 2 of the 12 tracks on it. This is what disruption is all about. As for the artists, previously when you loaned music to friends - and perhaps they recorded it on to tape - the artist got nothing - even if the music was played thousands of times. In the early days of MP3, major artists like Metallica made an enormous noise about MP3s being shared and they got nothing (I remember an interview with James Hetfield comparing his work being listened to for free as being analogous to a plumber working for free).Spotify has turned the music industry on its head - bands used to go on tour to promote an album - and made money from the album. Now they release an album, via Spotify, to promote a tour from which they make money. If they are clever they pay Spotify to promote their music to win over fans - I have been won over this way several times. Courteeners, White Lies and The Wombats are all acts* I have seen live (and would see again!!!!) that I only discovered because of Spotify - all of them will have have paid Spotify to reach me and listeners with similar music liking profiles. Without that they would never have reached me.In a similar way long-established artists have their back-catalogues available on Spotify - introducing them to a whole new audience - again winning new fans and bringing them to concerts - I have been to see The Who and Noel Gallagher based on this.(*I now have Frank Turner, Editors and Foals all in my sights for live shows - all because of Spotify.)https://lnkd.in/epfkhKtY#digitaldisruption #spotify #sportifywrapped #music #musicbusiness #musicindustry #

In my #DCIMCapstone project, I plan to focus on how music streaming platforms have made an impact on the music industry and its stakeholders. Platforms like Spotify or Apple Music have made it convenient for listeners to have access to a vast catalog of music, podcasts, and other audio services.I have discovered that an app like Spotify plays a pivotal role in shaping the choices of a listener. There are calculated algorithms in Spotify's playlists that can boost an artist's outreach. This strategy of shaping the listener's music preferences allows for concentrations of power to dictate what songs are popular. This can ultimately cause an imbalance in the music industry as power players will often be prioritized while emerging artists have a harder time getting that same exposure. There are concerns as to how the power dynamics of the music-streaming industry complicate the operation of royalties and licensing. I think this article is a great read that dives into those concepts. 🎸🎧#musicindustry #musicstreaming #musicbusiness https://lnkd.in/efntM4-5

🇮🇹 LIVE TODAY: Spotify's Italian "Loud&Clear" data!I am very happy to share the news that, for the first time ever, today Spotify release the Italian data from “Loud&Clear”, our annual report on music streaming and its economics. As a trailblazer in the music industry, we created L&C a few years ago to clarify the contribution that Spotify and streaming are making to the music industry. Loud & Clear aims to be a valuable resource for artists, the industry and fans around the world. It's great to see that Spotify is helping Italian artists live off their music, increasing their revenues and finding international listeners! Here are some highlights:- In 2023, the royalties generated by Italian artists from Spotify alone exceeded 126 million euros (+400% compared to 2017).- Streaming increases the number of artists generating revenues: in 2023, more than 1,200 Italian artists generated over 10,000 euros in royalties from Spotify alone - a number that has more than tripled since 2017.- Nearly 50% of all royalties generated by Italian artists on Spotify in 2023 came from listeners outside Italy.- Almost 80% of the songs featured in the Italian daily Top 50 in 2023 are by Italian artists. These numbers reveal the strong contribution that Spotify is making to the music industry as a whole, helping our artists to grow not only in Italy, where they already dominate the charts, but also abroad, internationalizing Italian music and culture.

Do you know how Spotify works? We see enormous numbers next to our favorite songs, and every year, we discuss Spotify Wrapped. But what's in it, that makes money? Who benefits the most from streaming, and are there any alternatives to the world-renowned model?Let’s talk numbers. Only 0.1% of all Spotify artists earn more than $100,000 per year. It's 7,800 musicians out of 8 million who are able to produce music and live on their own just by streaming royalty payouts. What do the other millions of people have to do? Aspiring and established artists are dissatisfied with royalty payouts averaging less than 0.3 cents per stream. This micro-payment system contrasts sharply with models of the past when musicians received a share from every rotation on radio or every album sale.Over the last few years, voices questioning Spotify's business model regarding artists have grown louder. Influential musical YouTubers like Anthony Fantano and Rick Beato openly criticize Spotify's business model. Prominent musicians such as Joni Mitchell and Neil Young quit the platform due to disputable content policies (only to quietly return later, for there are no alternatives). But is it really that bad? Spotify is a great instrument, giving artists opportunities they could not dream of before. Everyone with a mic in their bedroom can be heard by half a billion people. Every 16th person in the world is on Spotify and wants to hear new, fresh, and prominent musicians. For me, the only problem for musicians is to amplify their voice, really be heard by millions. And I believe, I know how to solve it.For me, the perfect balance between label, artist, and listener is attainable. Demuzo, an innovative B2C platform of music investments, will help rising artists to get their fair share. Users will invest in their favorite artists directly; producers will see growing interest in said artists and help them evolve, and everyone will receive interest when the said artist becomes a star. Artists will receive not only professional help in production or promotion but also much-needed funds to elaborate their vision. Musicians will finally be fully invested in the creative process, making our world a slightly better place. And what do you think about Spotify's business model? Let’s discuss!#Music #Spotify #Streaming #ArtistsRights

Here's some thoughts on Spotify that nobody asked for, but you're getting them anyway, such is the beauty of social media.I see both a deluge of Spotify Wrapped posts, and a lot of "f*ck Spotify" posts across social platforms. And I totally agree with the "f*ck Spotify" sentiment, but for me personally it's not one or the other. I use streaming (Spotify and LINE Music) mostly for convenience and discovery (although of course I have many other channels for discovery), but I also buy a massive amount of music on Bandcamp, and go to gigs where I will buy merch almost every time (I have a wardrobe overflowing with band t-shirts and an exasperated partner to prove it). I also never share Spotify or other streaming links on social media, but almost always Bandcamp links. So I feel that I can use Spotify and at the same time still actively support musicians. The problem of course is that I am a weirdo outlier, and having access to almost anything on Spotify (except for the *really* good stuff 😅), there are very few people who would pay for music outside of paying Spotify (very little of which, as we all know, ever makes it back to musicians). Which means, that despite feeling good about supporting music myself, I still feel somewhat bad about paying for streaming, just because by doing that I support these companies. But on the other hand, music streaming isn't going to go away, however much you and I may want it to, so not paying for streaming seems counterproductive - at least on an individual level -, as long a I buy everything I like separately anyway. Which of course I'll keep doing, just as I'll keep going to gigs and buy band merch. The moral of the story is that I have no clue what's right or wrong, but I do know that buying music, going to gigs, and actively supporting independent musicians in all these ways and more, gives me a hell of a good feeling. So if you want to feel as good as I do, and care about music, start buying music and going to gigs in 2024. ☺️
